If you do get the opportunity to visit Johnson’ Shut-Ins State Park, you will find an easy paved trail to the water, amenities like changing rooms and modern restrooms. There are many shut-in areas all throughout the Ozarks. S hut-in is a new term for us! It’s used in the Ozarks to mean a river that is limited in width because of natural rock which doesn’t erode. We wish we could have experienced swimming and exploring these amazing shut-ins, however, the area was closed during our visit due to high flood waters. A 100 car limit means that weekends can leave visitors waiting in line. Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park is a popular summer time swimming destination. With its rolling hills and varied landscapes, the state is a bicycling fan’s dream. Hike a trail that will show you 1.4 billion years of geologic history. Bicycling is one of the most popular activities in Missouri’s state parks, and it’s not hard to see why. Shoot through Mother Nature’s hydraulics in the shut-ins. Play in the shallows of the East Fork of the Black River. Abundant picnic areas and vibrant fall colors add to the park’s appeal. The park has a trail that winds through the rocks, which is an interpretative Braille trail. The coarsely crystalline red granite forms are popular with history buffs (who like to read the names of the 19th century miners who used to work in the area and who carved their names into rocks), children (who love to climb and scramble over and through the rocks) and parents (who revel in taking pictures of their children pretending to push the rocks).
